  • Thoughts on Aluminum 13.3" Macbook 2.0 ghz

After months of debating and waiting, I finally went out and bought the latest Apple offering.  My last mac laptop (which outlived my only PC laptop - Dell Inspiron 700m by several years) was a 700mhz G3 iBook from 2002,  so this is a bit of an upgrade. There are tons of reviews out there, so I won't bore you with a 1,000 words on it.

    THE TWITTERLINE
Love it. Is a decent update to the line, don't consider it if you have a recent version (get mbp if you must). Should make everyone's shortlist for a new laptop. Read on for specifics on my pro/cons.

SUMMARY OF SPECS (or as I see 'em. Want "full" specs? Use google)
    - Aluminum body
    - 13.3" screen
    - 2.0 ghz, 2GB RAM, 160 GB HDD
    - NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory (I think this is the card in last rev's MBP?)
    - multi-touch trackpad
    - draft n wireless, bluetooth,
    - 4.5 lb
    - 2 USB, NO firewire

So, what do I like about it?
    1) Multi-Touch track pad
i LOVE it. after using scrolling features on IBM thinkpads for years (and loving it, but hating its sensitivity) this is a godsend. this might be my favorite feature on this bad boy. (new to this version of macbooks)

    2) Ability to play Windows games!
I played Team Fortress 2 last night and had a ball. I used an application called Crossover Games by Codeweavers. The experience was positive, even though there are few incompatibilities like - no scroll well and inability to access the Steam community from in-game.

    3) The keys
This is a very personal choice, but I like the feeling and overall travel of the keys. It's kind of nice that they're a little separate too; I've often found that laptop keyboards are too squished so this is a nice relief.

    4) MagSafe battery charger
It's great that it snaps off harmlessly and easily. On my iBook I worried about this as well, because the port is on the left of the laptop and it was in the way quite frequently.

    a) Amazon
I totally recommend you buy it from amazon. It's cheaper, you get 3x points if you have an Amazon CC (like I do), plus there is an additional $50 rebate going on right now so you can save a few more buckaroos that way.  The only thing I was concerned about applecare - but I confirmed that you can buy it anyway even if you didn't buy the laptop from the store.

    MEH
    1) Case and coloring
I miss the monochromatic. And the 90 degree corners cut into my forearms. (new to this version of macbooks)

    2) Removal of mouse button/new touch pad
With the whole thing being a touch pad, and with multi-touch enabled I sometimes find that my finger or wrist is touching the pad without even me realizing it. It's annoying. (new to this version of macbooks)

    3) The screen
But not for what you might think. the glare doesn't bother me. in fact i think it's kind of amusing to be able to see my fingers type, but i guess i'm kind of narcissistic like that. i dont like the glossy screen because it attracts finger prints...which are just about impossible to avoid because you have to touch the screen in order to open the lid. it's like the iPhone-screen challenges times 10. ugh (new to this version of macbooks)

Buy it from my link! I get some commission. :)

  • My chance of surviving a zombie apocalypse? Not that great.

I have sadly come to conclude that my chances of surviving a zombie apocalypse/infection/attack are a little less than 1:2. Here are a few things about me that might get me killed:
    1) My house isn't really ready to stand on its own for any extended period of time
    2) I don't have a gun
    3) I don't have an exceptional stamina
    4) I don't have amazing wilderness survival skills

Maybe I should spend the weekend making my own garden, and getting a shotgun...

  • Etiquette: How to borrow a cell phone

New experience last night: a stranger asked to borrow my friend's phone, and then proceeded to talk on it for 20 minutes AND burst into tears while using it. SO strange!

Granted in this day and age, we all have a billion unused minutes but I still have decided in the event that I need to borrow a phone I shall:
    1) Ask politely
    2) Inform the person of the estimated duration of me call and tell them briefly why (i.e. forgot my phone but meeting someone here, lost my phone but need to etc etc)
2a) NOT plan to yap away on it
    3) Return phone as soon as possible
    4) Wipe phone down after using it
